Calvin Allen and his homebred gelding Frankie Floyd, aka “Frankie,” earned a 218 and the 2008 Select world championship in cutting on Sunday, August 31, the last day of competition. Charles Drummond and Most Stylish Mom came close with a 217.5 and won reserve. Calvin showed in the Bayer Select World cutting last year, but lost a cow in the first go-round and didn’t make the finals. They sure enjoyed their victory lap, though the gelding Calvin calls “a little goofy” didn’t much care for the awards table with that bright gold trophy sitting on it.
Q. Please tell us a little about this horse.
Calvin: We raised him; he’s out of a Doc Wilson mare by Freckles Floyd. He’s just been a good, solid little horse, good gelding. Full of energy, that’s for sure. When he’s rode down, he’s good.
Q. How were the cattle today?
Calvin: The cattle were good, all through, and cutting early. I just tried to go in and drive some cattle out and read my cattle good and see what was going to let me cut him. And get my horse showed on. I was able to get cut good. I had real good help – that’s always a factor, having good help. (Calvin’s help included Teddy Johnson, Bronc Willoughby, and Wayne Long.)

Frankie Floyd and Calvin Allen of Hudson Oaks, Texas, won the 2008 Select world championship in cutting. Eighth in the go, they marked a 218.
Q. Who is here to cheer you on?
Calvin: (He laughed.) My help. My wife (Brenda), she’s gone to the cuttings today. And I’ll probably go down there today if I get out of here in time to get down there. I haven’t hauled too much this year, I’ve been showing a younger horse. I haven’t shown this horse since Houston. Last week was the first time I got back on him. He’s been good.
Q. What made you come back to the Bayer Select World Championship Show?
Calvin: Well, I thought it was a good cutting. Sometimes if you don’t win, that doesn’t mean the cutting’s not good, it just means you’ve got to come back and try again.
Q. What do you like about this show?
Calvin: It’s good. It’s a little different. I’m used to going to (National Cutting Horse Association) cuttings most of the time, but this is a good deal. I think AQHA is working good with NCHA to work together, and I think that’s something they should be doing. It seems like more cuttings are having some AQHA in with the NCHA cuttings. It’s good that they are working together and be part of the same family a little bit.
Q. Have you won anything else with Frankie?
Calvin: Oh, I made the NCHA finals last year in the $50,000 amateur. My wife, she won quite a bit on him when he was younger. He was her horse, but she gave him to me because he was so goofy. He’s got a personality all his own. She says we’re just alike. (He laughed again.)
Q. Is there anyone you want to say thanks to?
Calvin: Just my help. And Randy Cherry trained this horse. I just want to really thank Randy for training a good horse and helping me with my cutting. Randy and Clay Johns both have helped me quite a bit, getting me on a good track.
Fun Fact: Frankie has earned $36,435 through NCHA. Calvin and Brenda have a 14-year-old daughter named Ashley.
