Showing Fancy Diamond Kid has been a family affair for Greg and Nicci Demint of Lees Summit, Missouri. The Journal spoke with Greg as he waited in line for his world championship photo and asked him to explain just how.
Q. Tell us about this mare.
Greg: We bought her, and she kind of has a Missouri connection. Doug Landon had her as a 2-year-old. Gary Werner had her in his barn getting her fit for a sale. He called us and said, hey, I’ve got one and you need to come look at it – really nice-minded, very pretty. We did and bought her at Robbie Rainer’s winter January 1 sale two years ago. My wife got the performance Register of Merit in showmanship on her, and that allowed me to do the performance halter. We’ve had a really fun year with her.
Q. What do you enjoy about the class?
Greg: I like meeting new people. I’ve been in halter for a long time, and getting to meet the performance people has been a lot of fun. We’ve had a good time with it this year.
Q. How long have you all been in Quarter Horses?
Greg: Since the early ‘80s. We’ve had a lot; we’ve come this far, but never got one of these gold trophies so we’re pretty excited today.
Greg Demint and Fancy Diamond Kid of Lees Summit, Missouri, are the 2008 Select world champions in performance halter mares.
Q. Is there anyone you want to thank along the way?
Greg: I want to thank those guys for helping us. Jason and Julie Smith have helped at the big shows, and I appreciate that. And our family has been very supportive. I have a young son at home who’s 8, Max, and we wish he was here today, but we’ve had a good time. He doesn’t show yet, but he’s starting to show interest. It’s a social event for him; we have a lot of fun as a family.
Q. What are your plans now for this mare?
Greg: She’ll go to the (All American Quarter Horse) Congress; I’ll show her back there. And my wife will show her at the (AQHA World Championship Show) amateur, and that will kind of finish our year out.
Q. Anything to add about being here at the Bayer Select World?
Greg: We enjoy the Select very much; this is our first trip out here. Everybody’s been great, it’s a wonderful place, and we’re happy to be here.
Fun Fact: Fancy Diamond Kid has qualified for the AQHA World Championship Show many times as a 3-year-old and aged mare. She earned her performance Register of Merit in showmanship in 2007.
