Q: Two world championships in one day. How does it feel?
Rodger: Well, you hear people talk about a golf god? There happens to be a roping god, I guess, so he must have been riding with me. It feels great. This is the greatest show to come to. I go to both of them, and (this one has) the camaraderie and the people, and it’s just more fun than any show you go to all year. It’s just great.
Q: Tell us a little bit about your mare.
Rodger: She’s by a horse called “Rooster,” and her mama was Genuine Redbud, and Robbie Schroeder did everything on her. She is so athletic – much more than I am. He started her in working cow, and we started roping on her. She’s just now starting to settle down and take hold and do what she’s supposed to do.
Q: Could you talk us through your tie-down roping run?
Rodger: Are you kidding? I’m not sure what I did! Robbie got onto me yesterday because I was late on my cattle, and I was getting out late. I looked at the cattle and didn’t think they’d run that hard. And sure enough they did. And when I roped on her, I got kinda hung up for a second. That calf was probably one of the biggest calves I’ve ever flanked in my life, and when he dipped, she worked so good, and I flanked him and he took a tie well and she just worked her heart out. She normally does. If I do my job, she’ll do hers.
Q: You didn’t have any time to savor your win before you had to rope again.
Rodger: There wasn’t much air down there. I couldn’t find any air in that whole arena. It was pretty dense out there.

Q: Walk us through your heeling run.
Rodger: Well, I wanted to get out and stay wide, and I did. But I hit the bleachers with my rope, so I had to shake it out and come back, and I didn’t have time to take but a couple of swings, and when I swung, she just dropped. She does her job.
Q: Who was heading for you?
Rodger: Robbie Schroeder. Robbie trained the mare. I’m 64. I started roping when I was 52 – that was the first time I ever roped a cow. I learned from rodeo cowboys, and then I got this horse and Irish Whiskey Mix from Robbie, and I go to Robbie’s quite often. He has chewed on my hind end, I’ll tell you, and his voice carries a mile, but he knows what he’s talking about and he’s showed me the right way to do it.
Q: What’s next for you?
Rodger: She goes to the World Show. Robbie will probably ride her in the heeling and the calf roping and he’ll ride “Whiskey” in the calf roping up there and then it’ll start all over.
