YEARLING MARES

LIGHTNING STRIKES TWICE FOR JOHN OGDEN.

BY  TONYA RATLIFF-GARRISON, FIELD EDITOR

Last year, John Ogden of Moab, Utah, led his 2006 filly Guns N Lace to his first world championship at the 2007 Bayer Select World Championship Show. Shortly thereafter, he sold the mare and this year brought Shes Lookin Cool to Amarillo to show in yearling mares. Well, lightning struck twice for John as he took home another gold trophy in the same class as last year. The Journal caught up with John to ask him about his winning run.

Q. Congratulations!

Thank you very much. This is just a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful, wonderful thrill.

Q. Tell me about Shes Lookin Cool.

I bought her from Denny Hassett. A friend of mine, Glenn Cantrell, found her for me, and we’ve had her for about six months and we just love her. What makes this even sweeter is we won this last year with another yearling mare, Guns N Lace. This is unbelievable. This just doesn’t happen.

Q. Does this second world championship feel just as good as the first?

Oh, yes! (He laughs.) It feels better. I’ve got to believe these get better every time. It’s just so fun to win. We go to so many shows, and these yearlings are tough. You get into 2 and under in amateur, and there are some nice 2-year-olds out there that you have a hard time qualifying. It takes a lot of work. A lot of dedication.

John Ogden won a second Select world championship in yearling mares. Last year it was with Guns N Lace. This it was with Shes Lookin Cool.

Q. What did you think about this pen of horses?

This was good. This was good. And I was glad to see the numbers were up this year. They were excellent.

Q. Were you nervous as they were calling out the placings?

Oh yes. You never know what is going to happen. I watched a couple of classes earlier and I sure couldn’t pick the winner. You never know what is going to happen. It’s called a horse show.

Q. Who fitted this horse for you?

My better half, Karla. She did most of the work. About 95 percent of it. She’s just a heck of a hand. A great lady. She’ll show her at the (AQHA World Championship Show).

Q. Will you bring Shes Lookin Cool back next year to the Bayer Select World?

If I still have her I will. I certainly will. I sold Guns N Lace last year and that was a whale of a deal. Built a new barn and a few other nice things.

Q. Is there anyone you would like to thank?

I would like to thank AQHA, Glenn Cantrell for finding this horse for me and Denny Hassett for putting up with me and selling me the horse. He and Doug fixed her up when we got here and got her all ready. They did a whale of a job. Doug and Marcie are wonderful people.
