ROPER KENT YOUNGBLOOD WALKS AWAY WITH TWO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS.
BY BECKY NEWELL, AQHA MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS EDITORIAL DIRECTOR
Q. Let's start with Docs Dual Peppy. He won a world championship in breakaway today?
Kent: Yes, today, and the last two years, too.
Q. How long have you had him?
Kent: I bought him as a 3-year-old; he's 9 now. He's just one of those little horses that's just a nice horse. There are a lot better horses, but you'd like to have a trailer load of horses just like him.
Q. Tell me a little bit about his breakaway run.
Kent: All I'm good at is taking a downtown run and lettin' it role somewhere! I finally got out of the corner quick enough to be quick. The little horse cows so much, he's hard to get to leave that corner sometimes. But I got out today and got one roped good. At my age, anything I can get is good!
Q: Let's talk about CD Style. He was reserve world champion in breakaway roping and world champion in the heeling.
Kent: He's another just real nice horse. He was a stallion up until three weeks ago, and he came up infertile. So we castrated him. I really would have liked to keep him as a stallion, but he'll be a nice gelding, too. He already had points on him when I bought him about a year ago. Clay Logan had trained the horse and showed him, and he's still just one of those automatic horses.
Q. What's his personality like?
Kent: He's gentle enough to be a little kid's horse, especially now that I've gelded him. In fact, that's what he'll be ... a kid horse.
Q. How was his breakaway run?
Kent: I was third out on him, and I was just a little bit later and I had to go take another swing or two, and that's why he won second instead of first, I guess.
Q: What about his heeling run?
Kent: He's just real easy to heel on, and I don't heel that good – me and everybody else knows that – but if he gives me time to track over just a little bit, it's just automatic. I won the Fort Worth Stock Show on him. I don't heel all that good, but I can heel on him. He's that good of a horse.
BETCHA DIDN’T KNOW ... Right after the 2008 Bayer Select World, Kent had his right knee replaced. "I had one done six years ago that went flawlessly on my left knee. So I got my right knee replaced September 15, 2008, and I got a staph infection in it. I've had three other surgeries and I'm still not completely sound. But I think I'm finally headed out of it. It was hard to get these horses qualified (for the Bayer Select World) because I just had a small window there in May to get everything done. My last surgery was in April. I had a few points from the end of 2007 toward qualifying, so I wound up having to bring three horses. I normally have three horses qualified in three events, but this year I had three horses qualified in two events."
