TRAIL

FAMILY FUN.

BY CHRISTINE HAMILTON, JOURNAL EDITOR

Ronnie Kent and Ill Be RV Radical rode last in the go for the trail finals of the 2009 Bayer Select World Championship Show. Jean Swiss and Eileen Cravens (previous Sooner Trailer Bayer Select All-Around Amateur winners in 2006 and 2007, respectively) both had the score to beat, a 217.5. But Ronnie was confident in the little mare his wife, Vickie, raised; they scored a 219 to win a first world championship for Ronnie and “BeBe.” It has been a great week for the Kent family and their homebred horses. Vickie and BeBe’s older brother, Wonit Ona RV Version, took the showmanship world championship on September 2. Longtime competitors, the Kents haul to shows across the country. How are they going to celebrate after this week? “Probably on the road,” Ronnie said, laughing.

Q. Congratulations, Ronnie, when you went into the ring today, were you confident?

Ronnie: Yes. I sure was. … I knew she had the ability, it was just, was it my time? I’m thankful that it was my time to win. She did great, and I just had to follow, just let her do her job – she’s good at it – I just had to let her do her job.

Q. How did you get ready this morning?

Ronnie: We got up early this morning. Jenny (Frid), she longed our horse for us, and Robin (Frid) went out there and put down a bunch of poles and we warmed up a little bit. Then came back in and got her ready to go.

Q. I know this mare’s family means a lot to you and Vickie both; please tell me a little about her.

Ronnie: She’s out of Ill Be Dun Won It, Vickie’s good mare. … She has produced Wonit Ona RV Version, and she’s a very good mama. And she’s by Radical Rodder. This is the second Radical Rodder I’ve shown and have had nothing but great success with them. I love the Radical Rodders.

Q. Who would you like to thank?

Ronnie: We have Robin Frid and his wife, Jenny, and Christie Arrington, our daughter. I’d like to give credit to (AQHA Professional Horseman) Michael Colvin, he has really put a lot of time and effort into (BeBe) last year, getting her trained and broke. And my wife, for believing that she was going to be a good one, one day. I’d have given up on her a long time ago, but my wife believed in her.

Q. It’s been a big week for you, did you expect to do this well?

Vickie: We had our hopes. That’s why you come! Everybody wants to be a world champion; that’s what keeps everybody coming back.

Q. What do you enjoy about the Bayer Select World?

Ronnie: I love being with all the friends. All the competitors here are so friendly, all of them are glad to see you and we’re glad to see them. I wish them good luck and they do the same, and I think they are just as proud for you to win as you are for them to win. …Everybody just loves to see people do good, especially at our age. We put our heart and soul into it, and we just love it and enjoy this, riding horses.

Q. Anything else to add?

Ronnie: We’ve had a great time. We appreciate AQHA for putting on this. We appreciate the judges; we’ve had a great staff of judges this week. I think they did a great job all the way through. We watched a lot of classes. ... Just having the opportunity to be able to come and show at a world is a great honor.

Q. Will you all come back next year?

Ronnie and Vickie, together: Definitely!

Ronnie: We’re horse show people; we love to ride and show horses.

Vickie: As long as we’re able.

Ronnie: It’s what we love to do.

BETCHA DIDN’T KNOW ...
Married for eight years, Vickie and Ronnie have 16 grandchildren between them; the children love to visit the Kent’s farm in Graceville to ride and play.
