| Rula Cool followed up his Ford Youth World win with a win at the Bayer Select World. |
Known around the barn as “Steeler,” Rula Cool scored the winning touchdown for Shelia McKenzie Tuesday at the Bayer Select World Championship Show when he earned her a gold trophy in the 2-year-old geldings.
“My whole family is huge Pittsburg Steelers fans, so that’s where he got his name,” Shelia said. “My husband wanted to get him and that’s what he wanted to call him.”
Steeler has been making the McKenzie family proud since they bought him as a weanling. The sorrel gelding won a world championship for Shelia’s daughter Alexis at the Ford AQHYA World Championship just a few weeks ago.
“I bought him when he was a stud, and I thought he was nice enough to stay a stud,” the Canton, Texas, exhibitor said. “But I really want to have geldings and mares because I want to be able to show with (Alexis). She just went to college, and we’ve been doing this since she was 9.”
Shelia said showing in the class before she led Steeler in the ring helped calm her nerves for Steeler’s class. And Steeler was his usual laid-back self.
“He’s a little bit of a pain to show because he’s a bit on the lazy side, but he did really well,” she said. “He’s gorgeous. People should want their mares to look as good as that gelding does. He’s got the body, he’s just, I just love him!”
