“This is a huge, huge thrill,” said John Ogden of Moab, Utah. “A very big thrill.” He and his 2006 sorrel filly, Guns N Lace, aka “Lacey,” had just left the arena as the 2007 Select world champions in yearling mares.
John bought the filly at last year’s AQHA World Championship Show sale from Greg and Jodi Sullivan of Maumee, Ohio. According to him, she was the first foal by the late stallion, Golden Gunslinger, to hit the ground. Her dam is Maid In Lace by Mr Conclusion.
“We really liked her, but we didn’t think she’d ever do this well,” John said. “She’s really come along in the last few months. We’ve had her with Tim Finkenbinder and things have just been great.”
John got into showing and raising halter horses about five years ago, through his “better half,” Susie Taylor. What does he enjoy about standing in the arena with a good horse?
“Oh, it scares me to death,” John said with a smile. “I just like having good horses, and if you feed a horse you might as well feed a good one. You might as well have a good one in the barn, as an old rider that the kids ride. We’ve got a few of those, too.
“I’m so excited about this filly; she’s phenomenal,” John added. “She’s just a great filly.”
The plans are for Lacey to continue right on with her show career.
“She’s going to the World (Show) with Tim Finkenbinder, and we’re really excited about that,” he said. “Tim and Jodi are doing a wonderful job with her.
“We’ll see what happens after the World; but as long as she’s winning she’s getting shown.”
