| It was the first world championship and the first Bayer Select World for Brenda Porter and SMS Cool It. |
Although Brenda Porter turned 50 last year, she was a little apprehensive about showing at the 2006 Bayer Select World Championship Show.
“But I got brave this year and my trainer, Dewey Smith, and I set up a plan on getting here,” the Wichita Falls, Texas, resident said.
Brenda purchased SMS Cool It last spring, and it only took two shows for her to get the yearling stallion qualified for the 2007 Bayer Select World.
However, her plan to make it to Amarillo nearly fell apart. About a month after his last qualifying show, SMS Cool It became ill.
“He didn’t want to eat and ran a high fever. He ended up losing a lot of weight,” Brenda said. “But then about six weeks ago, he just started feeling better and coming back.”
As the two entered the Amarillo National Center on August 28, Brenda was confident in SMS Cool It.
“I know it was a small class and I had my hopes up but I went in confident,” she said. “I was telling myself the whole time to put a picture of winning in my mind. So I had that picture in my mind and I just felt real confident against the wall when they were calling out the placings.”
With only two in the class, Brenda knew she had won her first world show trophy as soon as they called out the other exhibitor’s number.
“It was like lightning in my veins. It was awesome,” she said.
Brenda gives a lot of credit for her win to Dewey, who trains out of Dewey, Oklahoma.
“He has this horse so automatic,” Brenda said. “He’s very easy to set, and is very well-mannered. He knows his job. I went up and practiced a few times at Dewey’s barn, and we came up with a plan on winning a trophy. And just by the grace of God we did it.”
