For the second year in a row, April Speyer and Truck A Buck survived a jump-off against Ellen Williams and Earth To Wanda to claim the Bayer Select World Championship.

After the first round, three riders had gone clear to qualify for the jump-off. Ellen and Earth To Wanda went first, clearing the jump-off course in 29.828. April and Truck A Buck, jumping second, cleared the course in 24.924.

The third team to work, Charles Wilkins and Mr Six Dancer, jumped the course in 28.838 but took down a rail on the last jump.

“The course was great,” April said. “In the jump-off, Earth To Wanda went very fast, so I said, ‘I’ll go for it,’ fast and quick turns, and we left all the fences up.

“I turned one stride out of a couple of jumps, so it couldn’t be any shorter than that, and he just cleared them.”

April Speyer and Truck A Buck repeat as Bayer Select World Champions in jumping.

Truck A Buck, a 1985 bay gelding by Billy Ringo (TB) and out of Taco’s Velvet by Taco Bar, is known for his speed around a jump course and his unusual exercise regimen, though it has changed. After two years of pulling a cart for exercise, Truck A Buck now prefers to go visiting.

“We had to add -- because that’s boring him a little – we take him for a two-mile jog through our neighborhood behind the golf cart so he can see everybody,” April said. “It’s more interesting to him. The cart was getting a little boring after two years, so this has added a little spice. He can go jogging through the neighborhood. He loves it.”

People who don’t get to see Truck A Buck jogging through Wichita, Kansas, can see him in 2007 at the Bayer Select World.

“We have fun, and my horse loves to do it,” April said, “so as long as he wants to do it, we’ll keep coming.”
