Casey Cink and Im No Roan Angel in the senior pole bending prelims - in February of 2008 "Angel" was barely broke.
When Casey Cink of Kerens, Texas, bought her mare, Im No Roan Angel, she hadn’t planned on riding “Angel,” much less qualifying for the 2008 World Show in four events with her.
“I bought her for her ovaries, but ended up riding her,” Casey said of the 6-year-old bay roan she planned to use as a broodmare. Angel had barely been ridden or hauled by the end of her 5-year-old year when Casey found her in an ad at the Arizona National Stock Show.
But then, in February of this year, Casey’s primary competition horse was put out of commission after tearing a ligament.
“Angel had to step up and try to learn how to be a real horse, real fast,” Casey said. “When I bought her, she didn’t have her leads on her; she had never done barrels or poles.” Since Casey has started working with her, Angel – a great-granddaughter of multiple world champion racehorse Dash For Cash – has earned her Registers of Merit in open and amateur barrels and poles.
The duo competed in junior and senior barrels and poles this week. Prior to the World Show, Angel had never competed in an indoor arena.
“She’s come a long way but she needs another year before she deserves to be here,” Casey said. “Every show she gets a little faster and a little faster. By this time next year, we’ll make the finals for sure.”
