Invitation To Flash earned a $5,000 World Championship Show Sale Bonus check with his 2008 world championship in performance halter stallions.
With the fluctuations in the U.S. economy coinciding with the 2008 AQHA World Championship Show Sale November 15-16, it was anybody’s guess as to how the sale might or might not be affected – but it ended on a positive note.
“We’d probably characterize the sale overall as good for the current market conditions,” Mike Jennings said of Professional Auction Services, Inc. “Some horses will fare better than others.”
Sales for both days totaled $1,331,300, with an overall sale average of $4,754 for 280 head sold. The 96 no-sales averaged $5,670
“What we saw was that the higher end of our show horse prospects and breeding stock held up well against previous years,” Mike said. “And I think this is what we’re seeing throughout the course of all horse sales.
“We also see in our markets, for the western pleasure horses and some of the performance horses, that the record of the dam is becoming increasingly important,” he continued. “They can be by name-brand sires but the record under the dam is making more of a difference.
“For the hunt seat colts, the body type and size of the foal are important,” Mike added. “The sires are important, but the dam is not as important as the body type of the foal. We had some hunt seat prospects sell well this year.”
The high seller was Thewaythewestwasone, purchased by Randy Wilson for $42,500. A 2007 brown stallion by One Hot Krymsun and out of Rolls Radicalle by Radical Rodder, the colt was bred and consigned by Jane Cryderman of Goderich, Ontario.
Another interesting aspect of this year’s sale was the activity of international buyers.
“Approximately 70 horses out of the 280 sold did go to buyers from outside the United States, to include our close neighbors, Canada and Mexico,” Mike said. “That was about 25 percent of the horses sold. Last year it was about 17 percent, so it has been a very noticeable percentage of our buyers over the last several years.”
Halter prospects sold on Saturday, November 15, and performance prospects on Sunday, November 16. Mike pointed out that the average and percentage on both days was “similar,” but he did note one difference.
“We felt that the buyers from Mexico helped strengthen the middle part of the halter market,” Mike said. “And they created a lot of activity in the market.
“But on Sunday we found that the buyers from outside the United States were largely European, Germany being the largest buying group on the pleasure horse date.”
Mike also pointed out that the World Championship Show Sale Bonus Plan awarded a $5,000 world champion check to Invitation To Flash, for his 2008 world championship win in performance halter stallions. Cecilia Hylton of Gainesville, Virginia, purchased the stallion through the World Show Sale as a yearling.
“We also awarded a reserve world champion check at $2,500 that came from the sale this past Saturday,” Mike said. “Pretty Cool Elegance, in performance halter geldings.
“We’re pleased with the overall activity, compared to other things we’ve seen,” he added. “We’ll take this and work on new programs for next year.”
