With AQHA Pro Horseman Wayne Halvorson leading CRL Shesa Cool Coosa forward to receive her seventh world championship title, the 4-year-old mare’s breeder, Cal Loree, entered the arena with a big smile on his face. “J-Lo” is the longtime halter horse breeder's dream and her pedigree contains some of Loree Quarter Horses’ great sires: Ima Cool Skip, Perpetualism and Coosa. The Journal caught up with Wayne and Cal by the makeup pen in the Superbarn to ask them about J-Lo.
Q. Congratulations, Wayne. Tell me about this mare.
Wayne: Her name is CRL Shesa Cool Coosa and CRL stands for Cal and Rosemary Loree. They were the breeders of the horse. And what has been very rewarding for us is we stood Coosa, Ima Cool Skip and Perpetualism, and she is all a culmination of that breeding.
She was born on our ranch. She’s been sold a few times and some different owners have had her and had the opportunity to win a world championship, but now both Cal and I have now had the opportunity to have a world champion from her.
We’re now in the process of doing embryo transfers on her and she has some babies coming next year so we’re really looking forward to what she can do as a producer.
Q. Mr. Loree, what makes her a great product of your breeding program?
Cal: It’s a program that we’ve had through Coosa, Ima Cool Skip and Perpetualism. We’ve been putting this together and it worked. Myself, I never wanted to win a world championship with somebody else’s horse. I was more interested in raising one. That was really the big thing for me. She’s a beauty.
Q. With seven world championships, will you retire her now?
Wayne: I don’t think so. We haven’t really decided what we’re going to do with her yet. She’s on a roll. People love her. The judges like her. Many people came up to me today and said this mare looks better than ever. We’ll see what we’ll do with her. It’s fun to show one that can win, and she can do it. We like to show her to the industry because we believe that is what they are supposed to look like.
Q. Who would you like to thank?
Wayne: First of all I would like to thank Cal Loree and my family. They are like my pit crew. They are the ones in the background getting everything ready, doing the cheering and the hollering, they are my cheerleaders. The family in general.
Cal: I would like to thank Wayne and his family.
Fun Fact: With this win, J-Lo now has seven world championship titles: 2006 2-year-old mare, 2007 youth 3-year-old mare, 2007 Select 3-year-old mare, 2007 amateur 3-year-old mare, 2007 3-year-old mare and 2008 youth aged mare.
