Joy Stehney and Cabernet Kid won their first world championship title on November 14.
As the placings were lined up under each judge, Joy Stehney and Cabernet Kid were ensured a trophy with three thirds, one second and one first. However, Joy wasn’t sure where she would end up when the final placings were announced. So as Josh Weakly and One Silent Kopy were called for the reserve champion spot, Joy broke down in tears, realizing that she had finally won a world championship title. The Journal caught up with Joy by KC Montgomery’s photography backdrop to ask about her exciting win.
Q. Tell me about Cabernet Kid.
JOY: Our trainer, (AQHA Pro Horseman) Jason Smith, helped us purchase him a year ago August, and we have taken him to the Congress twice and some stock shows and that was pretty much it. He just went out and won everything. He’s fun to show. He’s absolutely gorgeous and I just love him.
Q. This is your first world championship. What does it feel like?
JOY: It feels fantastic. I’m probably going to celebrate for the rest of the weekend.
Q. Did the placings worry you?
JOY: I had no idea that I had won. I really thought it was going to be Josh.
Q. How will you celebrate?
JOY: I’m going to make my husband make it all about me for the next couple of days.
Q. Will Cabernet Kid show in open next week?
JOY: Yes. Jason will show him. I have very high hopes for him.
Q. How long have you been showing halter?
JOY: I’ve been doing this since 2000, but I haven’t been to the World Show since 2003. What I love about showing halter is that it is great to get out there in front of all those gorgeous horses and have to compete. I think it’s a lot of fun.
Q. Who would you like to thank?
JOY:I would like to thank my husband, Jeff, who puts up with my little hobby and supports me. And I would like to thank Jason and Julie Smith because they have been absolutely wonderful.
Fun Fact: Cabernet Kid is all show horse. Joy said the gelding doesn’t like it when he’s not in the first hole in a line up. “When he’s back behind other horses, he really doesn’t like that that much,” she said.
