Amateur equitation over fences world champs Royality In Blue and Jessica Johnson of Pickerington, Ohio, with AQHA President Ken Mumy of Metamora, Michigan.
Hot on the trail for her first all-around amateur title, World Show first-timer Jessica Johnson of Pickerington, Ohio, picked up a world title in amateur equitation over fences, riding Royality In Blue. The first to go in the class, the pair received a score of 360.
Q: This is your first visit to the World Show as an amateur, after graduating from youth competition, right
Jessica: Yes, I had four world titles in AQHYA competition.
Q: Tell me about your run.
Jessica: My approach was to just stay on the count and look ahead, and keep looking where I'm going and not lose track of where I am. I needed to stay with him (Royality In Blue) and keep him together, and don't let him get all strung out.
Q: What is your horse's barn name?
Jessica: "Bentley." He came with that name and it just stuck.
Q: What do you like about Bentley?
Jessica: Most of the time, he 100 percent gives me all he has.
Q: How did you come out in the all-around race at this year's World Show?
Jessica: At this time, I'm the reserve in the all-around. I missed the title by two points.
Q: Gee, reserve isn't bad for your first amateur year?
Jessica: No, not at all. I'm very happy.
Fun Fact: Jessica carries a small plastic squirrel with her on the road as a good-luck charm. It must have some positive karma because they left it at home one time not too long ago, and Jessica had a horrible show. The squirrel makes an appearance in most all of Jessica's win photos.
