2009 AQHA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW

NOVEMBER 6 - 21 | OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA

AMATEUR WEANLING GELDINGS
AMATEUR YEARLING STALLIONS

HOMEBRED DOUBLE-PLAY.

BY CHRISTINE HAMILTON, FIELD EDITOR

Rita Crundwell of Dixon, Illinois, opened the competiton on November 13 with a win in amateur weanling geldings. She accepted her award from AQHA Executive Committee Member Peter Cofrancesco III.

Two homebreds captured two 2008 halter world championships on November 13 for Rita Crundwell of Dixon, Illinois. First up was Jewel By Execute, a son of Rita’s multiple world champion mare, Jewels By Tiffany; he took the amateur weanling geldings title. Three classes later, Rita took the win in amateur yearling stallions with Subtle, a son of Phenomenal Ms, another of Rita’s multiple world champion mares. She’s a consummate showman who knows her stock, and is quick to thank the people around her like AQHA Pro Horseman Jim McKillips, manager of the Meri-J Ranch.

Q. You started the morning out pretty exciting - please tell me about the gelding, Jewel By Execute.

Rita: He’s out of my good mare, Jewels By Tiffany, which I showed, and he’s by Execute. It was the first baby for both of them this year. He was born early, he was an embryo, and he just looked like he’d be a nice horse. He was N/H, so we cut him. He just kept coming, so we showed at the (All American Quarter Horse) Congress, and he did very well there. I won the amateur (weanling geldings) there, and he was second in the (Congress Halter Masters colts/geldings) division. We just had a really good show there. He got a little sick, but then he came out of it so we decided just to bring him here.

Q. He seems like he has a great personality.

Rita: Oh, he’s a great little guy. He really is.

Q. NFL Hall of Fame Member Terry Bradshaw also showed in your class. I have to ask, what was it like to be in the arena with him?

Rita: Well, you know what, I have been a Steelers fan and a Terry Bradshaw fan for 105 years! Once, a long time ago, he was at the Congress and Jim got a Two Thumbs Up hat signed for me, and I still have that hanging in my house. I just thought, it would be so cool if I could just have one of my (world champion) T-shirts signed by him. I’ll see if I can get my courage up and go and get it done.

Rita Crundwell of Dixon, Illinois, and her 2008 amateur world champion yearling stallion, Subtle.

Q. Switching to the yearling stallion, Subtle, again, please tell me a little bit about him.

Rita: I also raised him out of a different mare, Phenomenal Miss, who is also a several-time world champion, and by Mr Touchdown Kid. We showed him just at two shows to get qualified so he was kind of unbroken, and by the end of the class he was mad, just ticked off and wanted to get out of there. (She laughed.) But I ended up doing very well, so I’m real tickled.

Q. What are the plans for him now?

Rita: He’s an N/N stud; he’s a very nice horse, pretty correct. If somebody wants to buy him, I’ll sell him, otherwise we’ll keep him and breed him.

Q. Anything else to add about the World Show this year?

Rita: The World Show has been awesome for me. I just need to thank everybody; Jim (McKillips), it makes me want to cry, but he’s so good, he picks out the horses for me. And all the help from the Laneys (Buddy and Jennifer) and Ross and Sharon Roark, and all the boys at home.

Fun Fact: At this year’s World Show, Rita also placed sixth in the amateur hunter under saddle finals on her 2008 world champion amateur performance halter stallion Good I Will Be.
