2009 AQHA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW

NOVEMBER 6 - 21 | OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA

AMATEUR WEANLING MARES

BABY, OH BABY!

BY LAUREN SCIBA, JOURNAL INTERN

Chip Rainwater of Hayesville, North Carolina and E Lady walked away with the world championship in amateur weanling mares.

The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree for 2008 amateur world champion weanling mare E Lady. Her mother, Miss Scintillation by Statuatory and out of Im So Irresistible, was the 2001 world champion weanling mare in the open division and the amateur reserve world champion. Chip Rainwater and his wife, Lorraine, of Hayesville, North Carolina, bred and raised the filly, making the win especially meaningful. The Journal visited with Chip to hear more about his world championship experience.

Q: Congratulations, Chip. How does it feel to be a world champion?

Chip: It’s my first world champion. I’ve owned several but it’s the first one I’ve won. I’ve had a couple reserves, but this very exciting.

Q: Weanling mares is not exactly the easiest class to show in or prepare for, what made you decide this mare was worth it?

Chip: We bred and raised this filly. We showed her mother and we won the world with her mother. It’s fun to go back with a good one. I really believe it takes outstanding broodmares to raise really good babies. This one and also the third place filly (Cool Elusive Lady), which my wife (Lorraine Rainwater) showed – we own four mares and had two babies this year and these are the two we had.

Q: What do you think you will do with her next?

Chip: We’ll show her in the open next week, and we’ll continue to show her until someone steps up and somebody else wants to own her.

Q: Tell me about her, what is her personality like?

Chip: She’s really easy to show. She was really quiet. We’ve had some that weren’t quite as easy to show and every one of them has a little different personality. But she showed her little heart out for me today. She’s an outstanding filly and I was glad to get her showing it.

Q: How did you prepare for the show?

Chip: Actually, (AQHA Professional Horseman) Jason Smith did it all. We have all of our horses out at Jason’s place in Whitesboro, Texas. This year, this will be the only show we show at because of our business and so forth we’re not able to go to a lot of shows – so we choose to show babies – you don’t have to qualify you just have to pay the entry fee.

Fun Fact: Lorraine and Chip foaled two fillies this year and showed both in amateur weanling mares. Chip said Lorraine had first choice of the two mares – he was glad she chose the one she did.
