Rick Adams of Patoka, Illinois, and Say CK square up. Say CK was named 2008 world champion amateur weanling stallions.
Rick Adams and his father, Dick, were beside themselves with excitement and gratitude after winning their first amateur world championship with their homebred weanling stallion, Say CK. After 25 years of breeding, this win was worth the wait. They were first under four judges and second under the fifth in a class of 21 entries. The Journal was able to catch up with Rick for a quick interview before taking his championship photo.
Q: Congratulations! How do you feel?
Rick: First thing I want to say is, I want to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for the good health he gives me and the privilege to breed and raise horses. We’ve been working at it for 25 years to breed and raise a world champion and finally we did it! It’s such a privilege to get to live in this country. I’m just so thankful. You know a lot of people have complained, this year especially, about this country and it’s just an honor and a privilege to live here. I just can’t say enough about how happy and thankful I am. It’s sure a privilege, and it’s fun getting to have the horses we have. They’re the most beautiful animal in the world.
Q: Did you have a strategy for breeding your world champion?
Rick: The one thing we did – we’ve been doing this for 25 years – my son, Trent, just really has an eye for it. About six years ago, we turned all the decision-making over to Trent. He decides who we breed to, what mares we purchase, and all of that. He has made all the difference. That’s why we’ve been getting so close and finally did it! He’s gets all the credit.
Q: Would you tell us your future plans for Say CK?
Rick: We’re planning on selling him. We have 15 broodmares and need to get them bred, and we just don’t really want to stand a stallion. So our intentions are to sell him and let somebody else have fun with him.
Q: Tell us about his personality.
Rick: He has been a real joy for us. He’s so good-minded and doesn’t do anything wrong. He’s just really a special horse. He’s a sweet colt. He was kind of shy as a baby – kind of hard to get to know, but once we weaned him he just craves attention and wants to be around people all the time. He’s just a lot of fun to be around. He’s going to make somebody a real good stallion, I believe.
