2009 AQHA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW

NOVEMBER 6 - 21 | OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA

GREEN WORKING HUNTER and
JUNIOR WORKING HUNTER

NO DOUBT ABOUT THIS WORKING HUNTER.

BY LAUREN SCIBA, JOURNAL INTERN

Bill Ellis and Broker Of Record accepting their first world championship of the night.

It was a unanimous decision across the board – in two classes. Broker Of Record owned by the Kaplow family of Chappaqua, New York, is the working hunter to beat. Piloted by Bill Ellis of Colts Neck, New Jersey, the pair took first place under all judges in green working hunter and junior working hunter. After being handed a world championship trophy for the second time in one night, Bill said he couldn’t have asked for anything more from the horse. The Journal visited with Sue Kaplow after the second victory to hear more about the graceful hunter.

Q: Congratulations! Tell me, how does it feel to have this horse win back-to-back world championships?

Sue: Just unbelievable – we’re so thrilled.

Q: What were you thinking when you heard that he was placed first unanimously under all judges?

Sue: That was a thrill to have it happen two times – that was great. We love the horse and we think he’s great. But to hear that the judges also liked him was a thrill.

The pair ran the course with the ease of a veteran hunter.

Q: What were you thinking while you were watching the class?

Sue: Well, I didn’t breathe because I’m so nervous. But it looked good and he’s very talented. I thought, well, it looks good, it looks like we’re going to get through this – not going to hit any rails or knock anything down. He’s a beautiful mover so that helps too.

Q: What do you think makes him so special?

Sue: He’s very athletic and he’s very trainable. He is a great mover. Put all that together, and he needs about 15 minutes to get in the mode. You don’t need to work him for hours to get him ready. Fifteen minutes and he’s ready to go to work – and that helps.

Q: What are your plans for him next?

Sue: He has one more class here and then he’ll have about a month off. Then he’ll go to Florida and then he’ll go to Ocala to the hunter jumper circuit. Not a lot of shows. He’s trained, he just needs to keep fit. And hopefully, he’ll be back here next year.

Fun Fact: The dam of Broker of Record, One For The Record, owned by Robyn Carol Kaplow, was the 1988 World Show Super Horse.
