Bobby Lewis and Look At Her Glo laced two steers - once in a go and another in a rope-off to win the world championship.
As if roping isn’t exciting enough, add a tie-breaking rope-off for the world championship between AQHA Professional Horsemen J.D. Yates of Pueblo, Colorado, and Bobby Lewis of Overbrook, Oklahoma, into the mix. Both ropers scored 227.5 in the first goes of junior heading. It came down to one throw, one dally and one final score that decided who would be the 2008 world champion. In his own words, Bobby was lucky enough to come out on top. After his run in junior heeling, the Journal caught up with Bobby to hear more about his win in junior heading with Look At Her Glo.
Q: Congratulations, Bobby. Tell me how your run went tonight. Bobby: I appreciate it very much. We had a cow that ran pretty good, and the mare was pretty good in the box. She was a solid citizen. She was really good in the box and ran right to the spot. I was fortunate enough to catch it; she just kind of took over, and the heeler did the rest. We had those kinds of rides both times, in the go and in the rope-off. We had the same kind of run three times in a row (in junior heading and in junior heeling). She was good the whole way through.
Q: What was your reaction when you found out there was going to be a rope-off? Bobby: You know, you just kind of take that in stride. I heard the results of it as they were calling out the scores, and I knew that somebody got us, and there was going to be a rope-off. I got back on her and started walking her around, just preparing her for it. You always like the suspense, and fortunately, I was lucky enough to come out on top.
Q: Will you tell us a little about the mare? Bobby: I raised that mare; she’s by a horse that I raised also. I’ve kind of got a soft place for her. She’s just been good the whole way through.
Q: What are your plans for her next? Bobby: I think we’re going to show her in the NRCHA (National Reined Cow Horse Association) some. We’ve kind of accomplished what we wanted to, we want to finish up the year on her. I think we’re just going to show her in the NRCHA some and some of those events. She’s probably already got enough records already, but you hate to leave her at home – she’s such a nice little show mare.
Fun Fact: In 2002, Bobby was the AQHA Professional Horseman of the Year.
