Bill Ellis and Broker Of Record teamed up to win their third world championship at this year's show.
They say good things come in threes – Broker Of Record is proof. After winning two 2008 world championships in green and junior working hunter, “Evan,” exhibited by Bill Ellis of Colts Neck, New Jersey, took his third world title, this time in junior hunter hack. With all this gold, it makes us wonder if talent is genetic – Evan’s dam is 1988 Superhorse One For The Record. The Journal visited with owner, Sue Kaplow, of Chappaqua, New York, to hear more about the gelding and his mother.
Q: Congratulations! How does it feel to have won three world championships this week with this horse?
Sue: Unbelievable. I can hardly process it. Tomorrow, I’ll wake up and realize it – it was great.
Q: Were you expecting to be this successful with him when you came here?
Sue: I was hoping so. He had a good fall and had won a lot in the fall at a very big show, so I knew he had the potential to do it.
Q: Tell me about his mother, 1988 Superhorse One For The Record.
Sue: Well, his mother lives in Pilot Point, Texas, and she’s 30 years old. She is still beautiful and still a very sound, very strong mare. I just wish that everybody could have had a show horse like her. We always depended on her and 100 percent she was always there for us. And at a great horse show, here, she was the Superhorse in 1988 and then we retired her. She’s been retired for a long time, having babies. But her last two are our best babies.
Q: Do you think that Evan has Superhorse potential?
Sue: I definitely think so. We’re going to start him in the cart and probably try to qualify him in the hunter under saddle because he’s a beautiful mover. So those are two things we’ll work on, along with the working hunter and hunter hack.
Fun Fact: Evan won world championships in all three of the classes he qualified for at this year's World Show.
