2009 AQHA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW

NOVEMBER 6 - 21 | OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA

JUNIOR TIE-DOWN ROPING

HOMEBRED, HOME-TRAINED, HOMERUN.

BY LAUREN SCIBA, JOURNAL INTERN

Jason Hanchey steps off Mega Bucks Boon during a clean run to win the world championship.

Junior tie-down finals went by in a flash. But, why wouldn’t they? With the top 15 tie-down ropers in the AQHA competing, one would only expect good, clean runs. Jason Hanchey’s run on Mega Bucks Boon, owned by O.L. “Buck” Daniel, of Okeechobee, Florida, was almost as good and clean as they come, with a score of 224.5. The Journal visited with Jason to hear more about Buck's homebred gelding that Jason trained himself.

Q: Tell us a little bit about your run tonight.

Jason: It was a super calf, and that horse was just ready to do it. We’ve been preparing for it for a long time. I was confident in him, that he’d take care of it and he did his job. He’s a super good catch, and I’m really proud of him.

Q: Tell us a little bit about Mega Bucks Boon.

Jason: He’s a 5-year-old out of a mare we’ve got down there on the ranch I work for – Buck Daniel is the great guy I work for. That horse is spectacular, and that horse has just been honest from the start. He’s been there and whatever I’ve asked him to do, he did it. I can’t fault him for anything.

Q: What’s your year been like so far?

Jason: I’ve been at home, most of it, but sent him out a lot. I kept that horse at home a lot, showed him and rodeoed on him down there at home. It’s been a good year – soon to get married – I’ve got a fiancé that I love a bunch and a step-daughter that’s going to be special. It’s a pretty good deal. That horse will go to my little brother down the road next year to pro-rodeo, so I’m pretty pumped about that.

Q: What are the plans next for you, the horse and the whole crew?

Jason: The horse will go out to my brother, stay down there and rodeo. I’ll pick another one out of the bunch and try again. I’ll just be down there in Florida doing the deal.

Fun Fact: In addition to Mega Bucks Boon, Buck Daniel also bred and still owns the 2007 junior tie-down roping world champion, Peppers Paniolo.
