Karen Hornick and A Certain Vino.
In November 2005, Lee Reeve of Garden City, Kansas, saw A Certain Vino at the AQHA World Championship Show, winning a reserve world championship in 2-year-old snaffle bit western pleasure for his owners, Tim and Lou Petty. Shortly after that, Lee’s name was the one on “Vino’s” papers – and it has been a fruitful partnership. Last year, with trainer AQHA Professional Horseman Karen Hornick of Jamestown, Ohio, Vino won a world championship in junior western pleasure. He also brought home a gold trophy for Lee’s daughter, Darcy, in western pleasure at the 2008 Ford AQHYA World Championship Show. And November 19, he won his third world championship, again in junior western pleasure. It was a unanimous decision under all five judges. Fresh off the win, Lee and Karen told The Journal about their dream horse: Q: Tell me what it’s like to come in here and win two championships in back-to-back years?
Karen: It’s like a dream come true. You have to pinch yourself as you’re loping around. When you show one like that, you know. He’s just an incredible animal. You lope him off, and his ears are forward. He is happy. He’s always happy. Every day you get on him, he’s just there. It’s the coolest feeling. He’s got a lot of talent. It’s very easy for him. Q: He also got a third-place trophy this year?
Karen: He got a third in junior western riding with Charlie Cole. Charlie took him from here last year and started him in the western riding and within a couple of weeks had him changing leads and said he would be great at it. He’s going to have a big career in that class next. He also did performance halter geldings (with Charlie) and placed ninth this morning. Q: What’s it like for you to buy a young horse and then watch him have this kind of success?
Lee: I think we’re like everybody else. When you buy a horse, you hope for the best, and this is one of them that just kept getting better. It’s a thrill, because as everybody knows, it’s a lot more fun to win than not to win. Q: So what’s next for him?
Lee: He’ll do more western riding. And of course, next year, he’ll be a senior horse. But he’ll still be a pleasure horse, and Darcy will show him in western riding and pleasure as a youth. Q: Is there anyone else you’d like to thank?
Karen: Tim and Lou Petty for selling him the horse and giving him a great start. It’s a really fortunate opportunity to have a horse like that. Fun fact:
