| BY LARRI JO STARKEY, COPY EDITOR Steve Ferguson leads Photons All Round in performance halter geldings for owner Bob G. Lines of Indiantown, Florida.
Photons All Round came into the Jim Norick Arena as the 2008 world champion in amateur performance halter geldings. He left as the 2008 world champion in open performance halter geldings. On November 19, he placed first under four of five judges in the hands of trainer Steve Ferguson of Tyler, Texas. During Bank of America Amateur Week, Photons All Round was the world champion in amateur performance halter geldings with owner Bob Lines of Indiantown, Florida, at the shank, defending his title from 2007. Steve took a minute to talk with the Journal about the 11-year-old gray. Q: Tell us a little bit about Photons All Round. Steve: He’s a neat horse. I get him and a mare, and I get them about two months before the World Show every year to get ready for the performance halter. They were both qualified in the heading and heeling, so I got to work on them, and about three or four days before the World Show, they go to the roping trainer, and he tunes them up and gets them ready for the roping, and then I get them back. Q: He looks pretty sharp in the show ring. Could you talk about that? Steve: He just feels good all the time, and he’s just a neat horse to show. He’s got a lot of energy. He’s just a great horse to be around. I enjoy getting him every year. Q: What’s next for him? Steve: He’ll go back to Florida, and I guess he’ll spend the rest of the year down there, and I’m sure they’ll come back and show him here again next year. Fun fact: Steve rides Photons All Round every day and uses the roping horse to pony his other horses. Bob had to return to Florida on business and didn’t get to see his gray rope horse improve on his 2007 third-place finish in the open class. He was in the air when the gelding won and wouldn’t find out until he landed.
