BRAD LUND EARNS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP ABOARD ROO STAR
BY KATIE HENDRICKSON, MARKETING INTERN
Brad Lund and Roo Star score a 227 in both the first go and rope-off to win the senior heading world championship.
After scoring a 227 in the senior heading with Roo Star, Brad Lund tied for first and was headed back to a rope-off against tough competition -- himself. He rode Sue C Shiner to the same score earlier in the night. The crowd was lit with excitement as Brad made quick catches and a quick horse change in the rope-off. Four solid runs later, it was Roo Star, a 1999 stallion, who earned the world championship.
Q: First of all, you’re probably running on adrenaline right now. How are you feeling?
Brad: Oh, I don’t even know what to say. It was quite an experience in the heading being tied with myself. It’s kind of remarkable experience.
Q: In the rope-off, you rode Sue C Shiner first and Roo Star second. How were you able to switch gears so quickly?
Brad: They’re both about the same. They both score good and are really talented. All I was thinking about was catch the steer and the rest will take care of itself. As long as I didn’t get in a big hurry and try to do something too major, they would take care of themselves.
Q: They didn’t announce the scores after the rope-off. Did you know, going into the awards ceremony, which horse won?
Brad: You know, they both felt really good. I didn’t have a choice of either. They were about the same to me. He slid a little more in the corner, and she faced better. The scores were pretty close there at the end.
Q: Will you tell us a little about Roo Star’s personality?
Brad: Roo is quite the individual. He’s such a good-minded horse. He’s just a great individual. I’ve rode horses that probably have more talent, but you can take him to the show pen and he’s a show horse. He likes what he does. He works hard and never cheats. He’s just a great horse. He’s a true show horse and gives his heart every time…every time.
Q: You exercise him on an Aqua Treadmill. How does he like that?
Brad: My wife and I have an Aqua Treadmill, and Roo loves the water. He goes down there and swims. It keeps him in shape, and we don’t have to ride him as much. It’s a great way to keep him in shape, and he stays happy. He just loves it.
Q: Is there anyone special you’d like to thank?
Brad: Everyone that’s involved with our family and barn. We have so many great people that help us out. It’s a community project.
