2009 AQHA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW

NOVEMBER 6 - 21 | OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA

SENIOR WORKING COW HORSE

TWICE AS NICE.

BY KATIE HENDRICKSON, MARKETING INTERN

Ron Emmons and his stallion, Olena Oak, turn the cow as they work towards a world championship in senior working cowhorse.

Last year at the AQHA World Championship show, Ron Emmons and his 2002 stallion, Olena Oak, won their first world championship in junior working cow horse. This year, they returned to claim a new title in the senior division. Their dry work score of 219 and fence work score of 225, combined for a total of 444, was more than enough to earn the victory lap and another gold trophy.

Q: Tell us first about Olena Oak.

Ron: I’ve had him for two, coming three years now. I won junior working cow horse last year on him. (This year), we got back in the finals, tied for fourth and fifth, and just was hoping for a good cow and a nice, smooth round, and it worked out well.

Q: Will you share the highlights of your run tonight?

Ron: I really tried to make the reining run as smooth as possible. I showed him the other night in the reining, and he got a little bold with me. So tonight, I had some ideas of what I wanted to do on the rundowns and turns and really tried to stick with the plan, and it worked out well. It’s just like I said earlier, there are a lot of tough cows out there, and a lot of good horses, and I just happened to draw a good cow. He was soft enough where I could get it worked and get down the fence. My horse really got back through those turns hard and got to the cow in a hurry. She never had a chance to get away.

Q: What are your future plans with him?

Ron: I’m going to take him to the World’s Greatest Horseman. That’s the first thing. I’ve started roping on him, so I’ll probably start taking him to some shows and roping on him and putting some roping points on him. Hopefully, maybe sometime bring him back here and run him for the Superhorse.

Q: Is there anyone special you’d like to thank?

Ron: My wife, Ladona. She really helps me out a lot and gives a lot of support.

Fun Fact: To date, Olena Oak's lifetime earnings are over $100,000.
