BRT Limited Edition and AQHA Pro Horseman Wayne Halvorson took the 2008 weanling geldings world championship for owner Bob Story, D.V.M.
Watching the judges’ lineup put the audience at the edges of their seats during the weanling stallions class on November 21. The top horses traded places, leaving everyone guessing. But when the dust settled, the palomino stallion BRT Limited Edition walked out with the gold trophy. Owner Bob Story, D.V.M., was on hand for the win – he also led the horse to the 2008 Select weanling stallions world championship. Bob had four generations of his family in the State Fair Park Coliseum with him, from his mother on down to his grandchild. In his winning run interview, Bob was joined by the wife and brother of the colt’s late owner, Steve Blount.
Q. Please tell us what makes this colt and this win particularly special.
Bob: I think he’s a beautiful colt, but he’s very special for several reasons. First of all, I have four generations of my family here, from my mother to my grandbaby, so that makes it special.
And then I have a couple of people here with me who were very important to the colt and to me getting the colt: Mrs. (Suzanne) Blount and Pat, Steve Blount’s brother. Steve bought the mare in foal to Mr Yella Fella, and he was wanting to see the foal born. He had terminal cancer, and he didn’t quite make it to the foaling. After the colt was foaled, my son-in-law saw him at the breeding farm when he was 3 days old and said, this is a special colt, and he called me. So I called Wayne, and I said don’t sell that colt until I can get back there. I’m a veterinarian at the racetrack in Ruidoso. As soon as I had a free day I jumped on a plane and flew back and saw the foal and bought him immediately. And (Suzanne) was nice enough to sell the foal to me.
And with Wayne's blessing, I said, as soon as that foal is old enough put him in the show barn. He has since won the (Palomino Horse Breeders of America) world, the (Bayer Select World) and now the open World Show. What a special privilege to own a colt like this, thanks to Mr. Steve Blount. And I think that he’s watching us somewhere.
Suzanne: It is such a pleasure to be here. This is just a dream come true. My husband lived for his hobby in horses. This is so special to be with the family today and get to see Mr. Halvorson show this horse.
Q. What are the plans now for the colt?
Bob: His plans are to continue showing. We’re going to continue showing him with Wayne. And we’re going to go for the PHBA world championship, and I might even get to the (Bayer) Select World again, who knows? After so many years of not showing, it was quite an experience, but I loved every minute of it. I used to show a lot, but with my work I don’t have time now to do so, so I’m going to try to get in there when I can.
Fun Fact:As a veterinarian at legendary Quarter Horse racetrack Ruidoso Downs in Ruidoso, New Mexico, Bob had a hard time getting away to show his weanling over Labor Day weekend at the 2008 Bayer Select World Championship Show – it’s the same weekend as the G1 All American Futurity, Quarter racing's best known race.
