Sashay This Way, 2008 world champion yearling mare, Ross Roark, Debbie Moore and AQHA Second Vice-President Johannes Orgeldinger.
It was a repeat win for Sashay This Way in the 2008 yearling mares class on November 22, led by AQHA Pro Horseman Ross Roark. AQHA Pro Horseman Luke Castle led her to the weanling mares world championship last year for owner/breeder Paradise Farms of Rio Medina, Texas. Since then, Debbie Moore of Baytown, Texas, purchased the mare. Debbie signed her world champion T-shirts and threw them to the crowd. The Journal spoke with her soon after.
Q. Congratulations again. Please tell me how you got this filly.
Debbie: Ross found her from Paradise Farms and he thought she’d be a nice filly. He bought her for me and he started fitting on her and I qualified her in one weekend. I’ve never qualified a horse in one weekend, we got her ready to go. It’s my first world champion. I was reserve with a stallion I had (JMK Maximus), but I’ve never won a world. So it’s really, really special.
Q. Did you show her in Bank of America Amateur Week?
Debbie: I did; she finished in the top 10.
Q. How did you get into halter?
Debbie: I’ve been showing halter for a long time, probably 20 or 30 years. I’ve been to the World Show four or five times. The closest we got to getting a world championship was my stallion, JMK Maximus.
Q. Who came with you today?
Debbie: This is my husband, Joe, and this is my grandson, Ayden. (Ayden grinned for the camera.)
Q. Joe, have you always been into horses as well?
Joe: That’s how we met. My father and I were actually into racehorses. I met Debbie at a racetrack. And our common interest in horses kind of led us together. We’ve been in it ever since, showing horses. … Ross Roark, I’m really impressed with him, how professional he is and the job he does. I really appreciate him.
Q. What are the plans now for Sashay This Way?
Debbie: I’m not sure. I want to show her some more and bring her back next year as a 2-year-old.
Fun Fact: Debbie and Joe's son, Michael, daughter-in-law, Jennifer, and grandson, Ayden, were in the stands to cheer on Sashay This Way.
