Gene Parker exhibited Western Gunslinger, owned by Donna King of Sanford, Florida.
After taking the reserve title in amateur yearling stallions class, Western Gunslinger, owned by Donna King of Sanford, Florida, came back to win the open yearling stallions world championship. The sorrel stallion was led by AQHA Professional Horseman Gene Parker, of Orrum, North Carolina and fitted by Ronnie Casper of Ocala, Florida. The Journal caught up with Donna amid congratulations and celebration to hear more about this young horse and his bright future.
Q: Congratulations, Donna! Tell us about the horse.
Donna: He’s Western Gunslinger out of a Coolest mare. He’s an N/N stud. He was found by my trainer, Ronnie Casper, who therefore had information passed on to me that made me want to purchase him. He has done exactly what he told me what he would do – he’s come along and become a better horse every day. And we’re just thrilled to death. He’s a great horse in my opinion.
Q: What were you thinking while you were watching the class?
Donna: I probably can’t say that here! (She laughs.) It was nerve-racking, but we got it done.
Q: What are your plans for him next?
Donna: He is going to stand at Doug Tallent’s in Whitesboro, Texas, and going to stud and hopefully be back here next year to do this again.
Fun Fact: The sire of Western Gunslinger, Golden Gunslinger, was an open and amateur world champion yearling stallion and PHBA world champion in 2004, and a world champion 2-year-old stallion in 2005.
