“She’s done now, that was her last show,” said trainer Ross Roark of Monahans, Texas.

There’s just not much left for Rita Crundwell’s mare, She Scores, to prove: multiple All-American Quarter Horse Congress champion, including winning grand champion mare, and multiple AQHA world champion as a 2-year-old, 3-year-old and aged mare.

She won the amateur aged mare world championship again on November 11, and now the open on November 18, the last day of the 2005 World Show.

“That mare, I’ve never been beat with her,” Roark said. “It’s like, you don’t want to see the streak end.

“A lot of people wouldn’t show her back (after last year’s aged mares win),” he continued, “but I had confidence in my mare, and I had confidence in myself and the people that work for me, and Jim (McKillips) and Rita.” (McKillips is the manager of Crundwells’ Meri-J Ranch.)

Aged halter classes are often a real treat to watch. It’s not unusual for several past world champions to be in the lineup because the class includes horses aged 4 and up.

Ross Roark led Rita Crundwell's multiple championship-earning mare, She Scores, to the 2005 open aged mares win; she won the amateur last week. The mare is now headed for retirement.
“It was an exceptional class of mares,” Roark said. “It’s as good a band of broodmares as a person could want. Anytime you can go and compete against those mares, and win, with the caliber of mares that were in there, a lot of it has to be luck.”

The class included Wincredible Curls, youth champion aged mare and open champion 3-year-old mare; Forever Showin Off, amateur champion 3-year-old mare and two-time champion 2-year-old mare; Ms Entitlement, champion 3-year-old mare and youth champion 2-year-old mare; and Sheza Virtuous Lady, amateur champion yearling mare; along with several reserve world champions.

The class even included Bob Bob Barann, the inaugural Region Ten Regional Experience aged mare class winner.

“I was nervous,” Roark said, especially with it being “Scores’” last time in the pen.

“But whenever I look back there and see that mare, the nervousness just goes away,” he continued. “She’s probably one of the greatest mares I’ve ever shown. I’ve been fortunate to have great mares, and she’s right up there with them.”

According to Roark, “Scores” is headed to Danny Salsman’s place in Aubrey, Texas, for the 2006 breeding season where she’ll produce foals via embryo transfer. She’ll have well-deserved green pasture during the day and a quiet stall at night.

“We have a ranch in West Texas, and that mare, she’s broke to ride,” Roark said. “She’s just a pet, good to be around, not a problem. Every time you look at her she looks good.

“She’s one-of-a-kind.”
