Object Not Found. Please verify that the object you are linking to exists.“He’s a horse that we raised ourselves at the house,” said Larry Roberts. His big smile matched the gold trophy he and his 2-year-old stallion, Acquisitions, carried out of the World Show arena. Roberts and his wife, Melody, and Melody’s parents, Wayne and Jan Bell, own and operate Bell & Roberts Quarter Horses in Burleson, Texas.
“He was born on the place, and we raised him, my father-in-law, my mother-in-law, my wife and myself,” he continued.
The whole family breeds and shows Quarter Horses together, including the Roberts’ 10-year-old daughter, Riley.
“She was as excited as anyone out in the stands!” Roberts said.
“It’s really special to win this with a horse that you’ve raised,” he continued. “There’s no feeling like it in the world. You can go out and buy one, but to raise one yourself is so special.

“We have anywhere from 10 to 12 foals a year, and you’d like to think that all of them are going to be special,” he added. “(Acquisitions) wasn’t the best one when he hit the ground, but he progressively got better as he got older. When he got to be a yearling, we knew he was going to be very special.”
Acquisitions was also grand champion amateur 2-year-old stallion at the All-American Quarter Horse Congress this year.
“There’s so many people that I’d like to thank!” Roberts said. “Mister Glenn Gullatt (an AQHA Pro Horseman) started this colt for me, and he really looked at him and said he was a good colt; I’ve got to give a big thanks to Mr. Glenn.
“Naturally, Ted Turner had the horse for me and had him so ready,” he added. “We’ve had a very, very special year with him.”
The win holds an extra special significance now: Bell & Roberts Quarter Horses stood the colt’s sire, Cluition, who passed away this past August. Cluition was the 1993 world champion 2-year-old colt, who was also an AQHA performance champion with points in western pleasure, barrel racing and pole bending.
It looks like Acquisitions might just be the horse to step up and take his daddy’s place.
“We’ve got a pasture full of mares that need breeding, so we’re going to see if this colt can produce anything,” Roberts said.
