With the reigning title of world champion amateur tie-down roper, Jim Tannehill of Tulsa, Oklahoma, came to the World Show with a lot to prove.

“Last year I came out, not a thing to lose, I knew I could do it and I just had to do it,” Tannehill said. “This year I came back, and I definitely wanted a huge accomplishment, which in my opinion, was winning two titles back to back. That’s what I was striving for; I knew I could get it, so the pressure absolutely doubled this year.”

He was able to reclaim his title with a score of 219, just one point ahead of competitors CJ Murphy and Sid Miller.

Tannehill credits part of his success to his horse, Zans Even Parr, which he has been riding since 1994.

“When you look at a calf horse, there’s a bunch of different variables to look at,” he explained about “Smurf’s” talent. “I guess the huge thing is the tremendous amount of consistency. He’s a very, very consistent horse, and that’s the name of the game in this event.”

Jim Tannehill listens to AC/DC
when he prepares to compete.

As a senior in business at Oklahoma State University, Tannehill has a history of success in AQHA events. Besides the 2004 amateur tie-down roping title, Tannehill has been a champion at the AQHYA World Championship Show in tie-down roping.

“I want to take every thing I have gotten from the American Quarter Horse Association and calf roping, and I want to allocate all of that into the business world. Hopefully, I’ll be just a fraction as successful as I have been in this event,” he said, adding, “I’ve taken away exactly what it means to be dedicated to something, I’ve also taken away that logic will prevail over any situation because in that arena, the pressure will get to you, and you have to just sit back and think, ‘Hold on a second, I’m here, this is the same as always.’”

Twenty-one-year-old Tannehill said that his success is the result of years of hard work and practice in the roping arena.

“I got involved around 10 years ago, and I just started practicing,” he said. “It’s been a long, long journey, and my parents have been with me every step of the way. And I have definitely had some heartache, but the successes have been worth it.”
