AMATEUR WEANLING MARES

DESPITE HIS HESITATION IN SHOWING HER, MAC CRAWFORD WINS WITH ELUSIVES CHARM.

Mac Crawford didn’t even want to show Elusives Charm at the World Show.

“I came and said I don’t need to show her,” the Nashville, Tennessee, businessman said. “She’s too young. She’s immature. Let’s not do this.”

But his trainer, AQHA Professional Horseman Jason Smith, told him he was going to show the young filly. And good thing he did. The pair won the amateur weanling mares world championship title Thursday, November 10.

“Shows what I know,” Crawford said with a smile.

The filly, who was foaled near the end of March, is by Crawford’s stallion, Elusive Kid, and out of his mare, Cool Skips Fancy by Ima Cool Skip.

Mac Crawford and Elusives Charm won the amateur weanling mares championship.

“We love her mother. She is one of ‘Cool Skips’ greatest all-time mares,” Crawford said, adding this filly is from Elusive Kid’s second foal crop.

“That’s the best thing about winning this is she is by my stallion. He’s young, but we really like what he’s throwing and his consistency of his horses. But this is his first world champion, so we’re really excited.”

Crawford also gives a lot of credit for the championship win to Smith, who will show the filly next week in open weanling mares.

“I have about 30 horses with Jason, and he does such a great job,” he said. “He’s honest. He’s straight forward. He works awfully hard. He’s just done a great job for me.”

Crawford was considering selling the filly before the amateur win, but thinks he may hold on to her a little longer now.

“After next week, we’ll reevaluate and see what we do with her,” he said. “I think she’s going to be a great one, so we may end up keeping for a little while. But we’re doing this to also make a profit, so we may still sale her someday.”
