He has earned more than $1.5 million during his roping career, and been a mainstay at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo for the past 10 years. He can now add his first world championship to his résumé.
The Durant, Oklahoma, native set the pace for the senior tie-down roping when he and Eightys Sport jumped out first in the finals and scored a 226.

“I was kind of worried about being first,” Burk said. “We just had to do what we could do with it. It was a tough class with a lot of great showmen, and I was really happy when I rode out of the arena.”
There are few horses have great success in both the rodeo and horse show arenas in the tie-down roping. Burk is fortunate that “Sweetness” can transition into both arenas. He competed on Sweetness at Cheyenne Frontier Days this year, and he won the rodeo and horse show at the 2005 Houston Livestock Show.
“He’s just the kind of horse I can rope fast calves and heel off of,” Burk said. “He’ll thump ‘em and jerk them down. He’s versatile and good at his job.”
Burk bought the sorrel gelding four years ago from Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association hall of famer Roy Cooper.
Burk plans to be back at the 2006 World Show to defend the title, but he'll make his next run at a world championship during the WNFR, beginning December 2.
