Object Not Found. Please verify that the object you are linking to exists.Phillip Wilkinson and Richard Peden were barely out of the arena when their cell phones rang.
Their wives, Michelle and Jo, had been watching the yearling geldings class on the AQHA Fort Dodge Webcast, and they could barely contain their excitement as Wilkinson and JMK Virtual Reality stepped out of the lineup to claim the gold world championship trophy.
This was trainer Wilkinson’s first World Show win, and “It’s pretty exciting,” he said. “I’m tickled.”

Peden, however, is an old pro, having won five previous world titles. And his horse, known around the barn as “Ronald,” has also seen time in the winners circle.
He and Peden won the amateur yearling geldings world championship November 11, and the horse also captured amateur and open wins at the All American Quarter Horse Congress the month before, giving him a sweep of all divisions at the nation’s two major shows.
“He’s just a big, square horse,” Wilkinson said. “He likes to show a lot.”
But besides having the brawn (Wilkinson and Peden wouldn’t venture a guess as to how much the muscular yearling weighs), Ronald also scores high on congeniality.
“He’s got a lot of personality,” Wilkinson said. “He’s like a little kid, always doing something, always finding something to do. He’s a lot of fun.”
Back home in Duluth, Georgia, Wilkinson works the horse six days a week and puts in “a lot of brushing,” he said.
“He’s a good trainer, and he does a good job fitting the horses,” Peden said. This is the 12th year that Wilkinson has trained horses for Peden, and the owner is glad to see him getting his due.
There are plenty of others ready with applause, as well.
Peden owns a general contracting business, and he said his 13 employees were probably tuned in to the Webcast.
“My whole office was watching (the amateur class) last week,” he said. “No work got done, but that’s OK. It’s time to celebrate.”
