Any horse trainer’s dream come true is winning a world championship. And as a birthday present? Professional Horseman Sandy Vaughn of Ocala, Florida, says it’s pretty wonderful.

On Saturday, November 18, Thumptin Jazzy gifted her trainer with a world championship in junior hunter hack.

“This could only top off how special the day is to me anyway,” Sandy said.

Riding the 4-year-old bay mare for owner Rita Crundwell of Dixon, Illinois, they performed two effortless fences, a clean halt, then finished strong in the rail work.

Sandy Vaughn and Thumptin Jazzy win junior hunter hack.

“I’ve had her since the Gold Coast last February and taught her to jump,” Sandy said. “We aimed for the World Show, and had no idea it would come this fast. She’s been a good girl…for a girl.

“She’s just really sweet and tries to please. She’s been very good this whole open week. She was sixth in the green (working hunter) and seventh in the junior (working hunter).”

Terrie Brewer Booth’s Investment Hunter, ridden by Chuck Briggs, was named reserve champion.

“Everyone (in the class) was good,” Sandy said. “The competition here was the best of the best. She came in the arena, picked up the canter and just did her job. A lot of times, being a horse trainer, I can’t just stay out of her way. This time I said, ‘OK, you’re on your own, you know what to do. She did her job.’ ”

Bred by her owner, Thumptin Jazzy is by WF Two Thumbs Up, a 12-year-old stallion sired by Calyx and owned by Crundwell. She is out of the Sonnys Hot Jazz mare Sheza Jazzy Lady.

And as for which birthday this is? Sandy says she’s not telling.
