Although neither Legendary Colonel nor Sam Rose are new to the winner’s circle, each picked up their first AQHA world championship with a 433-point run in the senior working cow horse finals.

Sam Rose and Legendary Colonel won the senior working cow horse finals on Thursday, November 16.
Legendary Colonel, by Little Lenas Legend and out of Colonel De Light by Colonel De Boon, was the National Reined Cow Horse Association non-pro Snaffle Bit Futurity champion with Anne Reynolds three years ago. Sam Rose bought the sorrel gelding for owners Shannon and Hershel Reid of Pilot Point, Texas, not long after and started focusing on making him a tremendous horse to show for years to come. At just 6 years old, Legendary Colonel shows like an old pro. He floats through the reining pattern and can make the toughest cow look easy.

“It’s just like any class – the reining or the cutting or anything – the good horses make it look easy, and that’s the hard part,” Sam said. “Good horses like him, they have their own presence. He’s got a lot of charisma about him, with style and ability.”

Sam grew up completely engulfed in the horse industry. From cutting and roping, to showing halter and pleasure horses, Sam has pretty much done it all. And even though he’s not a first-time AQHA world champion, he admitted the cow horse title ranks at the top.

“This is probably the best one for me,” he said. “The cow horse, I haven’t been doing it that long. And with him, being that he’s kind of the pet of the farm, I’m tickled to win it with him.”

Sam’s program is based on patience and longevity and his goal is to have a great performance horse that can withstand the test of time. He has taken things slow with Legendary Colonel, allowing him to grow to his full potential.

“We’re just kind of getting him in the bridle now,” Sam said. “We don’t do a lot of rigorous training at home, because it’s almost all done. We rope on him and we play with him just to let him get a little older and he’ll be an even better horse for us.”
