 | Ted Turner Jr. shows A Kid By Design for Vernon Habighorst in the 2-year-old geldings class. | In two weeks, Vernon Habighorst and A Kid By Design have collected two world championships. On November 9, Vern and the gelding won amateur 2-year-old geldings. On November 15, Ted Turner Jr. led the horse to the open title.
“Ted found him, and he’s a good one,” Vern said of the 2005 sorrel. “We got him in Florida, and he was a stud, but then we gelded him. We like him. He’s a handful, but he shows good.” On his way to the win, A Kid By Design picked up two firsts, one second, one third and one fourth under the five judges. Vern watched the 19-horse class, worrying about the placement while his wife, Rita, worked at their custom saddle booth in the trade show. “Actually, Vern called me and said, ‘I think we’re second,’” Rita said. “Then he called me a little bit later and said, ‘We won it!’” Though Rita wasn’t in the arena watching, Vern offered her his appreciation when telling the crowd in his in-ring interview what he likes most about his horse. “That my wife pays the bills.” Horse: A Kid By Design Pedigree: Image of Kid x Design N Lace by Design In Mind Exhibitor: Ted Turner Jr. Owner: Vernon Habighorst, Phoenix, Arizona Breeder: Kent R.
