 | Ross Roark shows Kids Keeping Cool in the aged mares class for owner Gerri Leigh Pratt. | As “Luck Be a Lady” played over the coliseum speakers November 17, Ross Roark led Kids Keeping Cool to the top of a strong class of aged mares at the 2007 AQHA World Championship Show.
“There were some multiple world champion mares in there, and it was one of the toughest classes here at the horse show,” Ross said. “Luckily, we won.” That same luck was operating November 9 when owner Gerri Leigh Pratt led the same mare to the amateur title. And the same luck must have been in play a month ago when Kids Keeping Cool was named grand champion open and amateur aged mare at the All American Quarter Horse Congress. Maybe it wasn’t luck. Kids Keeping Cool is a 4-year-old chestnut mare by The Finest Kid and out of Keep Me Cool by Coolest. “This mare was born with a lot of what she’s got, and we just work her every day and keep her sound and get her hair good,” the AQHA Professional Horseman said. “She’s a mare that’s really good-minded. “She’s broke to ride, so that helps, being able to exercise her by riding her. It keeps her mind better. She’s an exceptional mare, one that comes along every so often, and luckily, I had her this year.” The world champion most likely has motherhood next on her schedule, Ross said, with retirement to follow. “She’ll start going to the broodmare band, I imagine, and we’ll start getting babies out of her and hopefully they’ll come out looking like her and we’ll be back in business,” he said.
