 | | Vernon Habighorst won his first world championship after 18 years out of the halter ring. |
It had been 18 years since Vernon Habighorst had shown halter horses when Ted Turner helped him find A Kid By Design in February. Nine months later, Vernon was leading the 2-year-old gelding out of the AQHA World Championship Show arena as the world champion. “He used to show a lot,” Vernon’s wife Rita said. “We got out of it and got back in and here it is the World Show after all these years. It’s exciting.” What was the Pheonix, Arizona, exhibitor thinking about as he lined up under each of the five judges at the World Show and ultimately earned his first world championship? “I was thinking of Rita,” he said, “my boss.” Vernon said Rita had horses her entire life and she’s what keeps him hooked on the business of showing horses. “Our son showed horses through youth and we did the whole youth thing,” Rita explained. “Then we got busy with our business and didn’t have time for horses. But now’s the time to take time.”
