Sparking Train added world champion to her resume when she won senior heading at the 2007 AQHA World Championship Show with J.D. Yates aboard. The mare is owned by Tony Costa of Stockton, California, and bred by Vaquero Farms Inc. “She’s been a pretty special horse,” Tony said. The 1998 sorrel mare is by Shining Spark and out of a mare Tony said he should have kept, Sister Train by Reminic. “I had the right cross,” he said. “But then I couldn’t buy the mare back.” Last year, Sparking Train earned reserve champion in working cow horse with Don Murphy aboard and placed 12th in the final round this year. In 2005, Don and Sparking Train won the open two-rein class at the National Reined Cow Horse Association World Show. “She’s been with trainers since I’ve owned her,” Tony said. “She’s going home now and we’ll get some babies out of her.” J.D. and Sparking Train were second coming into the heading finals. The pair made a solid run and came out on top of the competition.
