WEANLING GELDINGS

FRANKLY MY DEAR, WE DO...

BY CHRISTINE HAMILTON, FIELD EDITOR

AQHA Pro Horseman Jason Smith of Whitesboro, Texas, led BKR Frankly My Dear to the world championship in weanling geldings.

The weanling gelding BKR Frankly My Dear has made two women very happy in just one short week at the 2007 AQHA World Championship Show.

During Bank of America Amateur Week, his owner and breeder, Doreen Beale (Perris, California) led him to a third-place finish in amateur weanling geldings Thursday, November 8.

One week later, during Fed Ex Open Week on November 15, AQHA Pro Horseman Jason Smith led the gelding to a world championship in weanling geldings for his new owner, Beth Birenbaum (Dallas, Texas).

“It’s one of the most exciting days of my life,” Beth said after the win. “I’ve enjoyed showing halter horses, and it’s one of my most proud days.”

Aside from the gelding’s good looks, what appealed to Beth the most about her new horse was his temperament.

“He showed like he was a veteran,” she said. “He was just -- everything about him is positive.”

Beth has owned and shown halter horses since 2002, and she loves showing off the American Quarter Horse.

“It’s one of the nicest ways to show a horse,” she said.

Overall, the World Show judges liked BKR Frankly My Dear – between the 10 judges in the amateur and open competition combined he earned three firsts, three seconds, and two thirds.

But the woman who raised him thought he was special from the get-go.

“I always told my husband and everybody that this was a really good one,” Doreen said. “I brought him to the (2007 Bayer) Select World (Championship Show) with the mind that he was going to sell.

“It was all Linda (Pigg’s) idea,” Doreen continued. “She said, you know, you really need to get this colt ready to show at the World. I said, well, OK. I’ve been doing this since 1971, so this is my first time. So it’s very exciting to be the breeder (of a world champion).

AQHA Pro Horseman Linda Pigg (Gordonville, Texas) also suggested a great showman to lead the horse through the pen – and that’s how Jason ended up with the lead line.

“We’d both like to thank Linda because she did such an awesome job (fitting the gelding), and it was her idea to get him this far,” Doreen added. “We have a full sibling (to him) coming in January! We’re very excited – it’ll have big shoes to fill.”
