WORLD CUP WESTERN RIDING-SUNDAY

WESTERN RIDING WIN GIVES GERMANY SECOND GOLD; ITALY TAKES SILVER

BY CHRISTINE HAMILTON AND ABIGAIL WILDER

Philip Knebel of Team Germany won another gold medal on Sunday with Steve Ouellet of Team Italy taking second place and Holly Marshall of Team Australia placing third.

One In A Hundred and Philip Knebel of Team Germany are simply a winning combination. They captured their second gold medal on Sunday, July 2, in western riding. It’s Team Germany’s second gold overall thus far in the competition.

Earlier Sunday they won the western pleasure, and won the silver in western pleasure on Saturday, July 1.

“It’s an awsome horse,” said 16-year-old Philip. The two are the same age. The 1990 sorrel gelding is owned by Alexandra Nichols. He is by Mr Rusty Zipper and out of Karen One Hundred by Dirk One Eleven.

Philip is an avid competitor back home in Germany. He shows his Quarter Horse at least three times a year and at the European Nationals, riding in the all-around events. He’s the only one in his family who shows, although his mother has a Thoroughbred.

“(At western shows), it’s a lot more relaxed,” he said. “The people at the shows are more comfortable. In the English-(style) shows, it’s all about winning. Here it’s like, if somebody wins, everybody is happy.”

Germany has one of the larger international youth associations, and the selection process for its Youth World Cup team was intensive.

“Germany has about 300 youth,” Philip said. “Thirty were put into a group, and we had two meetings. Our trainer chose the ones who were going and the ones who were riding.”

Philip also competed in the 2004 Youth World Cup in Australia. It’s his first time to the States, although he has been to Canada.

STEVE OULLET GRABS WESTERN RIDING SILVER MEDAL

Steve Oullet, 15, won his first medal at the 2006 Youth World Cup on Sunday in western riding with Im Rusty Impression.

Riding for Team Italy, Steve is no stranger to the Youth World Cup. At the 2004 Youth World Cup in Australia, he won a gold and silver medal in western riding, and a silver medal in trail.

“This is tremendous,” Steve said. “I am really happy.”

“He knew he was going to place well, but he didn’t expect second place,” Steve’s mother, Guylaine Deschênes, translated.

“I tried to make the least mistakes possible,” Steve said. “I tried to keep my concentration to the end.”

This class was Steve’s first time to show the 13-year-old gelding owned by Beth Donley. The sorrel is by Julies Impression out of Buet Straw by Rusty Straw. Steve said he knew the horse would be good when they rode in the clinic earlier in the week.

Steve’s mother and father are both trainers in Italy.

“I have been riding since I was born,” Steve said.

He has been showing for eight years, and he said his favorite event is reining.

“Reining is the most appealing,” Guylaine translated. “It’s more appealing, what he feels like when he’s reining gives him so much adrenaline.”

Steve has enjoyed his time in Amarillo at the Youth World Cup.

“I really like this place,” Steve said. “(I like) the way they organized the clinics; the place is wonderful.”
