Colin Luba and Good For The Ladys practice showmanship.
Colin Luba is not an easy person to find.
Everyone knows him, but no one seems to know where to find him.
Luckily enough, after two days of searching for the immediate past president of the AQHYA, I was lucky enough to meet up with Colin to discuss his life both inside and outside of the show ring.
Colin and his 6-year-old gelding, Good For The Ladys, aka “Red”, are qualified this year in western riding, horsemanship, trail and showmanship, but he feels most confident in the latter two.
“I’ve demonstrated the most consistency in (showmanship and trail),” Colin said.
He noted a strong similarity between trail and the duties he performed as president.
“When you are showing (trail), you try to put together the pieces very smoothly - the most correct - so that all of the judges are being pleased. When you’re president,” he explained, “you have to go about things that would be the best for everybody, too.”
After looking at the preliminary showmanship pattern, Colin seemed unaffected by the obvious level of difficulty.
“I’m usually pretty good about straight line trots,” Colin said. “(Red) really is a good backer. He really moves off my body. Hopefully, I can make the half-arch back look good,” Colin said with a laugh.
Even with the responsibilities as the AQHYA president, Colin skillfully kept his riding an equally as important priority in his life.
“Actually, because I took a year deferment from school, I was able to get a lot done: both as my duties as president as well as riding.”
Colin will be attending Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, this year.
