AQHYA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW

AQHYA MEMBERS DO MORE THAN RIDE HORSES.

BY JIM BRET CAMPBELL AND MEGHAN MACKEY

Maggie Fortune sang for a packed house at the Cowtown Talent Show opening night at the Ford AQHYA World Show.

Maggie Fortune loves music and horses. She came to the right place to combine her talents at the Cowtown Talent Show at the Ford AQHYA World Championship Show and took home the overall title.

A 2006-2007 AQHYA Director, Maggie began singing in earnest when her chorus director heard her singing going down some stairs and asked the teen from West Hartford, Connecticut, if Maggie would be interested in singing a solo.

Her version of “Every Time I Feel the Spirit,” launched her singing career and landed her in Cowtown.

Maggie took home the vocal and overall wins at the talent show, but she wasn’t the only AQHYA member proving to the crowd that riding isn’t the only thing they do well.

Samantha Mitchell played Beethoven’s "Furelise" on the piano to win the instrumental category. The 15-year-old Floridian didn’t qualify a horse for the Youth World, but she’ll stay plenty busy this week competing in the horse judging contest with four of her friends.

Mary Bluhm had a secret weapon going into the talent show dance competition. Her sister is a former cheerleader for the Kansas City Chiefs, and Carol choreographed Mary’s routine.

Mary normally competes in all-around and is a classical singer.

“I just dance for fun,” the Sedalia, Missouri, teen said.

Josh Faulkner and Kyle Fuller didn’t get a lot of time to practice, but they pulled off a smooth rendition of Cross Canadian Ragweed’s “Alabama,” in the potpourri category. Josh drove from his home in North Carolina and barely made it into Fort Worth before the mandatory rehearsal Friday afternoon.

“Kyle called me six or seven times in the last 30 minutes between here and Dallas,” Josh said. “I didn’t answer the phone.”

Kyle was getting pretty nervous, but the two friends managed to run through their song a few times before their performance. It was Josh’s third year to sing in the talent show, and Kyle’s first playing guitar.

The winners from each division will perform again Saturday night at the awards banquet.
