Alexis R. McKenzie and her family are big fans of the Pittsburgh Steelers. So much so that back home in the barn, Alexis’ 2-year-old sorrel gelding, Rula Cool, is called “Steeler.”
She should have guessed then that she would win the world championship at the 2007 AQHYA World Championship Show in 2-year-old geldings, a class sponsored by former Steeler quarterback Terry Bradshaw, who now raises halter horses.
“He’s a really nice horse,” Alexis said of Steeler. “I’ve had him for two years. He’s kind of stubborn, but I really love him. He’s just an awesome horse, and I’m glad to have him.”
Alexis, a competitive cheerleader and dancer, led Steeler to her second world championship August 11.
“(In 2003), I won in yearling mares with a palomino filly, (Cool Madonna),” she said.
Alexis, an 18-year-old from Canton, Texas, will attend Austin Community College in the fall. She hopes to continue showing.
“I’ve been showing since I was about 9 years old,” she said. “I have one more year. Next year will be my last year.”
