AQHA Media Earns Awards
AQHA Media continued its pursuit of excellence as it was recognized in May in writing and design categories through the American Horse Publications Equine Media Awards program.
“Start With the Show” appeared in the March 2018 issue of The American Quarter Horse Journal and earned first place in the instructional single article category. It was written by AQHA Senior Editor Larri Jo Starkey with AQHA Professional Horsewoman Melissa Maxwell of West Mansfield, Ohio.
Journal freelancer Kate Bradley Byars was first in the service to the horse industry category with “Door to Opportunity: Think outside the arena to create a great client base for your training business.” That article appeared in the July 2018 issue of The American Quarter Horse Journal.
Ranch Horse Journal Editor Andrea Caudill won second in the personality profile category for “Pick and Shovel,” which appeared in the Summer 2018 issue of Ranch Horse Journal and featured AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeder Madonna Inn Quarter Horses of Carrisa Plains, California.
Journal freelancer Katie Navarra was second with “Dear Younger Me: Don McDuffee,” which appeared in the September 2018 issue of The American Quarter Horse Journal.
America’s Horse Editor Holly Clanahan received an honorable mention for her “The Masked Rider Rides Again” from the digital edition of the November magazine.
David Brown, a graphic artist for AQHA, designed “Coaching Champions” in the October-November 2018 America’s Horse and received an honorable mention for his work.
Byars also received an honorable mention for “Not for the Faint of Heart” in America’s Horse, featuring frequent working cow horse competitor Brooke Wharton and her adventure in the Mongol Derby.
Former AQHA Media employee and frequent contributor Abigail Boatwright received an honorable mention for “Good Bones,” which appeared in the April 2018 Journal and presented American Quarter Horse Foundation-funded research into bone loss prevention.
The American Quarter Horse Journal received an honorable mention in the general excellence category.
The AHP Equine Media Awards program celebrates excellence in equine journalism. American Horse Publications will celebrate 50 years in 2020.
