The results of the Grade 1 Ruidoso Derby and Ruidoso Futurity put a new horse at the top of the AQHA Racing National Poll for older horses and launched a new contender for the top position in the 2-year-old rankings.

In the rankings for 3-year-olds and up, Bill T. Robbins’ Apocalyptical Jess was a near-unanimous choice at No. 1 after winning for the fourth time in as many starts this year in the June 8, $958,766 Ruidoso Derby at Ruidoso Downs. Rusty Allred’s Fernweh, winner of the $1 million Ruidoso Futurity a day later, jumped up to No. 2 in the 2-year-old poll behind Heritage Place Futurity (G1) winner Uptowne Babe. Both Ruidoso winners come from the barn of Trey Wood.

Last year’s champion 2-year-old gelding and winner of the All American Futurity (G1), Apocalyptical Jess went over the $2 million mark in earnings with his latest win and he moved up from No. 2 in the previous older-horse poll. Political Attraction, who won three graded stakes during the Remington Park meet and was ranked No. 1 in the last poll, slid down to second.

The previous 2-year-old poll saw Uptowne Babe and two-time graded stakes winner Trump My Record in a tie for the top spot, and the latest results now have Uptowne Babe alone at the top with Fernweh in second and Trump My Record a close third.

Due to the July 4 holiday, the next set of racing polls will be released the week of July 8. Among the major races set to be contested before then are the Ed Burke Million Futurity (G1) and Vessels Maturity (G1) at Los Alamitos and the Firecracker Derby (G3), Firecracker Futurity (G2) and Lee Berwick Futurity (RG1) at Delta Downs.

The integrity of American Quarter Horse racing is of utmost importance to AQHA. As part of a multifaceted effort to ensure integrity, AQHA has instituted a policy concerning awards and publicity that makes horses with racing medication positives and horses trained by trainers with racing medication positives ineligible for the AQHA Racing National Polls.
