Bank of America Challenge Championships

The Championships week filled with great racing and great activities.

Beginning on October 23, fans of American Quarter Horse racing will have a celebration of the sport as the Bank of America Racing Challenge Championships weekend kicks off at The Downs at Albuquerque in New Mexico.

“I am very pleased with the enthusiasm for this year’s running of the Challenge Championships, as well as the other activities that surround the event,” said Chief Racing Officer Janet VanBebber. “In addition to our regular Racing Conference activities that include the Racing Workshop, the AQHA Race Committee meeting, the Racing Council meeting, and Owner’s Recognition brunch, The Downs at Albuquerque is hosting fun activities as well. Our friends in Albuquerque are committed to making this a great event, and I want to encourage everyone to participate in the fun. As a horseman, I am most pleased with the robust nominations for both the Challenge Championships and the undercard stakes. Enthusiasm for the Challenge Championships is evidenced by the most abundant list of potential participants we’ve seen in several years. It will be a fantastic night of racing! I am grateful for the support of everyone, including the owners, trainers, and management of the Downs at Albuquerque.”

The party begins with a post-position draw on Wednesday, October 23. 

Educational meetings begin on Thursday, October 24, with the AQHA Racing Workshop. This all-day meeting is open to AQHA racing affiliates, Racing Committee members and racetrack personnel.

Also on Thursday is the Downs Challenge Golf Tournament, which starts at 11 a.m. at the Albuquerque Country Club. The deadline to register for the two-man team event is October 21; call 505-400-5699 to sign up.

At noon on Thursday, The Downs at Albuquerque is hosting a Ladies Fashion Show Extravaganza. The fashion and jewelry show with champagne luncheon Luncheon and Fashion Show. Set to be held in the First Turn Lounge at the racetrack, reservations must be made with Beth McKinney at 505-400-5701. 

The AQHA Racing Committee meets on Friday, October 25. 

After the races Friday night, in the Tingley Coliseum near The Downs, Little Texas will headline a concert with special guest Rick Trevino. The band’s hits include No. 1 singles “What Might Have Been,” “God Blessed Texas,” and My Love,” as well as songs like Kick a Little” and “Some Guys Have All The Love.” 

Rick Trevino’s hits include “Running Out of Reasons to Run,” “She Can’t Say I Didn’t Cry,” “Learning As You Go,” “Doctor Time,” and “Bobbie Ann Mason.”

Finally, on Championship day, October 26, owners will be recognized at a special brunch, followed by an AQHA Racing Council meeting.
