Sent to post as the 2-1 favorite in a full field of eight distance specialists, Madewell scored a 2 3/4-length victory in Saturday's $101,606 Cox Ranch Distance Challenge Championship (G1) at The Downs at Albuquerque.

Madewell covered 870 yards in :44.684 while earning a 111 speed index and his first Grade 1 win. Benito Baca rode the homebred 6-year-old Jess Jones gelding for owners Ray Madewell and Davy Madewell and trainer Bernard Baca.

Madewell was bred in Oklahoma. Raced in Oklahoma and New Mexico, the gelding has won eight of 29 starts, including eight of 27 at the 870-yard distance, and the $48,771 winner's share of the purse from his third stakes win increased his bankroll to $238,115, of which $238,028 has been pocketed at the 870 trip.

Madewell has won four consecutive races, including the August 23, $55,000 AQHA Albuquerque Distance Challenge (G3).

Illtakeyouforaride finished second and was followed by SW Bullet Proof, High On Chablis, Higher Flyin Eagle, Edelman, Ms Esther, and CM Once Ina Bluemoon.
